ST. LOUIS - Savvy Red Sox fans have learned, to their lasting heartache, to make no October assumptions about their beloved ballclub. They have seen too many woeful pitching decisions, too many elusive grounders, too many mad dashes around the bases by the opposition, to take the champagne off the ice before the last out of the last inning of the last game has been jotted down in the scorecard.

But this time, this October, the Red Sox are kneeling in the on-deck circle of immortality.
しかし今度、この10月、レッドソックスは伝説になろうとしている。

With Pedro Martinez settling into a beauteous rhythm last night at Busch Stadium, pitching seven shutout innings in the Red Sox' 4-1 victory over the awkward St. Louis Cardinals in Game 3 of the World Series, Baseball America's most tortured franchise is just one victory away from winning the grand prize, one victory away from chasing away not only 86 years of ghosts and goblins, but 86 years of bad karma and even worse management.

He limited to the Redbirds to just three hits in seven innings, and he simply got stronger as the innings wore on, setting down the last 14 batters he faced.

But more than having the right pitcher on the hill, the Sox had the right manager standing at the bottom of that hill, as the oft-maligned Terry Francona agreed with the graphs and diagrams and astrological charts that teach us that Pedro Martinez before 100 pitches is, well, Pedro Martinez, but that Pedro Martinez after 100 pitches has a way of morphing into an aging righty from the Boston Park League.

After seven innings last night, Pedro's pitch count was at 98, and, well, come on, admit it: As that inning ended, you looked closely at the television and you stalked Petey all the way to the dugout, every little pigeon step of the way, to look for the telltale hugs and high fives and slaps on the back that suggested somebody else would be pitching the eighth.

And for those of you who have that cherished loaf of ``Big Yaz'' bread languishing in the back of the freezer, vowing never to dine on those tasty morsels until the Red Sox have won the World Series, well, it may be time to open that left-hand door on the ol' Amana and get ready for tonight.
